The CCAFS Gender and Social Inclusion (GSI) unit seeks to recruit a Science Officer. The position will provide support to the research agenda and management of the unit, reporting to the GSI Research Leader.

Deadline: 13 May 2016

Responsibilities

  • Work with the GSI Research Leader to facilitate GSI research in CCAFS and with research partners
  • Provide capacity building and support partners on selected research projects and impact assessments
  • Lead research in area of expertise
  • Manage and support communications with CCAFS, liaisons at other institutions, and organizational partners
  • Provide program management support, including activity and budget planning and reporting
  • Grant identification, proposal writing, and reporting

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in economics, agriculture, or related discipline
  • Experience in gender analysis and research related to climate change or agriculture at the project, national or global levels
  • Publication record demonstrating innovative and practical contributions to academic and/or applied literature on gender issues related to climate change and/or agriculture;
  • Experience in capacity development and training in gender and development an asset;
  • Strong organisational skills and demonstrated ability to deliver successful project outcomes (both independently and as part of a team), prioritizing and organizing own work as required;
  • Provide inputs for technical papers and analytical studies
  • Assist in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, seminars on the economic value of climate services for agriculture and food security in Africa;
  • Contribute to the preparation of materials and technical documentation
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues and institutional stakeholders in both virtual and face to face environments;
  • Perform other related duties and administrative tasks, as agreed by the CCAFS Gender and Social Inclusion Research Leader
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral), with demonstrated ability to communicate complex information to a range of audiences in a clear and inspiring manner.

Post location: Flexible. The Science Officer position can be based within the offices of a CGIAR center or other CCAFS strategic partner. The Science Officer will work virtually with Sophia Huyer, GSI Research Leader based in Canada at the Women in Global Science and Technology (WISAT).

Position level: Science Officer

Duration: The position will initially extend to December 31, 2016, with possibility for renewal.

Post-Doctoral Fellow – Adaptive Building Systems

About the Position:The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) is looking for an Adaptive Building Systems Post-Doctoral Fellow to join its Building Energy Technology Group. We see numerous opportunities to take advantage of long-term trends toward pervasive in-home sensing, computing, and communications to reduce building energy consumption while enhancing peoples’ lives. In particular, this position will focus on developing, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of different combinations of sensors, data, and controls to enable new energy efficiency and demand-response capabilities in buildings. We expect that this work will leverage Fraunhofer’s prior development of the FRESH platform – Read  more.We are seeking a creative systems-level engineer or scientist with the confidence to envision the future and the hands-on technical chops to develop and prototype real-world solutions. You’ll be an important contributor to a dynamic, interdisciplinary Energy Management & Behavior team that includes electronics, behavioral science, data acquisition, data analytics, and energy systems experts with a shared commitment to excellence, combined with a passion for sustainable energy technology. You will also closely collaborate with researchers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with similar technical interests.Principal Responsibilities:

  • Implement and enhance state-of-the-art and emerging sensing and control technologies in the built environment
  • Acquire data from deployments in the built environment and evaluate the real-world effectiveness of the controls, diagnostics, and analytics approaches implemented
  • Collaborate on the development novel data analytics to infer key energy-related variables in buildings, i.e., occupancy, activities, energy efficiency and demand-response potentials, etc.
  • Work with the team on industry- and government-funded research projects

Background and Education:

The ideal candidate will have the following experience and education:

  • Demonstrated hands-on excellence in performing systems-level experimental research and development in a relevant field, such as responsive environments, adaptive buildings, context-aware control, in-home
  • Superior expertise in developing, deploying, and testing prototype control, sensing, data acquisition, and/or feedback systems in the built environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Publication track record in a relevant field
  • Willingness to work concurrently on multiple research projects
  • Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Controls, etc.

 Fellow – Solar Module Innovation

About the Position:

The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) has on going needs for new Fellows to join its photovoltaics group. This is an opportunity to build up R&D capability in a new Fraunhofer center and to work with cutting-edge clean technology solutions for a wide variety of clients. You’ll be a key part of a dynamic team based in Boston, Massachusetts working on sustainable energy technology development.  Fellowship positions last for 6 months.  Many Fellows go on to find successful employment because of the practical experience acquired at Fraunhofer CSE.

Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:

  • Work with engineers and scientists to design next generation module concepts, and execute on experiments to test them.
  • Perform module material degradation tests, and carry out experiments to understand underlying failure mechanisms.
  • Operate, maintain and improve module fabrication and characterization equipment for R&D applications.
  • Build and assemble mechanical and electronic devices relating to solar modules and characterization.
  • Design and monitor laboratory experiments on modules and communicate results using verbal and written means.

Post-Doctoral Fellow – Electrical Systems and Grid Integration

  • Lead development of an integrated hardware-in-the loop distributed energy resources test lab
  • Lead and contribute to proposals to develop, test, and evaluate the performance of novel power conversion, generation, and control technologies
  • Develop an integrated PV, demand response, and storage system for residential applications
  • Support development of novel integrated grid-edge hardware/software technologies
  • Perform power systems simulation and modeling for static, dynamic, and transient electrical systems
  • Support instrumentation, measurement, and analysis of field data for demonstration and pilot projects
Qualifications:

Required Experience:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or other relevant field
  • Development of an integrated hardware / software test lab
  • Track record of having won competitive research grants
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in areas such as:

o   Control theory and controls development for distributed systems

o   Instrumentation, testing, & measurement of electronic systems

o   Embedded systems integration

o   Power conversion

o   Power Flow Analysis

o   Techno-economic analysis of engineering systems

o   Communications protocols and methodologies for distributed generation

Desired Qualifications:

  • Passionate about sustainable energy, renewables, and the power of technology to effect positive change
  • Ability to understand big picture problems, and capable of applying this understanding to solve applied, real-world problems
  • Multi-disciplinary engineering background and interest, including controls, software, hardware, and mechanical systems
  • Experienced with designing and developing usign LabView test fixtures
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, etc), load flow modeling packages (e.g., PSCAD, PowerFactory), and numerical modeling software like MATLAB/Simulink
  • Skilled oral and written communicator
  • Effectively collaborates in a team environment
  • Creative, self-driven individual with a desire to expand capabilities, ability to quickly learn and adapt new skills

Wind Data Scientist
